Switzerland
Although not well known as a wine nation, Swiss wine production is on a par with New Zealand levels of a few years ago. The difference is that very little Swiss wine is exported. The Romandie regions in the west, Vaud, Valais and Geneva, account for about 2/3 of Swiss production. The Ostschweiz and the Drei-Seen regions in the North-East have 600 winegrowers. Ticino in the south of Switzerland, covers just 1000 ha of vines. Output is split about 60:40 between red and white. Quality conscious wineries in Switzerland have attracted international acclaim, notably for their ice wines and indigenous varietals such as the Cornalin and Humagne Rouge.
