Burgundy
Wineries in Burgundy adhere fiercely to the ‘terroir’ concept of winemaking. Each of the region’s 150+ appellations is the expression of the the soil and micro-climate specific to that terroir. Burgundy classifications are geographical in focus. The AOCs are divided into four principal categories: grand crus, premier crus, village and regional appellations. From the earliest times Cistercian monasteries played a pivotal role in the evolution of winemaking in Burgundy. The climate is characterised by hot summer weather and cold winters. Many wine experts believe that Burgundy offers the most perfect expressions of the region’s quintessential grapes, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
